October 2006 .:. Harer Family Prayer Letter October 20, 2006 Mexico! We are here – and have been for awhile. Our lives have also been a whirlwind of activity since we crossed the border on the 5th of May. We have found a house, purchased furniture, started language school, made friends, traveled to Mexico City four times, acquired a religious workers visa, studied Spanish, learned our way around Cuernavaca, welcomed our first guests from the States, got a dog, studied Spanish, began guitar lessons, said good bye to our homeschooling helper and studied Spanish. Whew! We wished that it was possible to put into words what it is like to live here – in a foreign country – away from the support and comforts of home. It’s teeming with adventure. There is always something new just around the corner or a new way to do things whether it’s street vendors, purchasing all drinking water or running for the garbage truck when the bell rings. In the spiritual realm, it’s a complex and completely different world. The word that best describes it is “syncretism” (blending). Imagine a world of Native Americans who worship multiple gods and live in fear, superstition and oppression. Force a religion on them that is “Christian”, but is filled with its own rituals, oppression and superstition. Understand that they accept the rituals of this new religion but at the same time continue in their own beliefs, often giving their gods “Christian” names. Add five hundred years and a modern society and you have a picture of the Mexican world. Prayer is a necessary ingredient for us. We believe that your tenacious prayers of faith will make the difference in the advance of the Gospel in this spiritual warfare. As J.O. Fraser said, “We want you to take the burden of these people upon your shoulders; we want you to wrestle with God for them.” If you could stop and hold the ropes in ten minutes of earnest prayer for the following requests we would be encouraged and blessed: 1) As a family we continue to adjust and make new transitions 2) For the wrestling match (Ephesians 6 :12) 3) God’s grace to many, many Mexicans 4) Continued clarity in language and culture
